Description: Around 1584, Pieter van den Keere fled religious persecution in Ghent (now Belgium) and settled in London. His sister, Colette van den Keere ( #113), who also relocated to London, married Jodocus Hondius ( #18, #80, #82, #114, #123, #126, #253 and #272) in 1587. While in London, Pieter training as an engraver under his brother-in-law Hondius. In 1593, both Keere and Hondius left London and settled in Amsterdam, where they continued their work.nThis map was created by Pieter van den Keere for his 1614 series of folio-size maps of the four continents, featuring decorative borders. Like his earlier edition of 1608 ( #109) this map is based on Mercators projection. However it features a dotted line marking the 16151617 expedition of navigators Jacob Le Maire and Willem Cornelisz. Schouten, whose mission was to find a new route to the Moluccas, a key hub of the spice trade. During their voyage, Le Maire and Schouten discovered a strait separating Tierra del Fuego, at the southern tip of South America, which they named Strait of Le Maire, as marked on the map. This discovery provided an alternative route to the Pacific, bypassing the Straits of Magellan.nThe map also depicts the vast, unknown southern continent, labelled "Magallanica," with detailed inscriptions largely derived from van den Keere's 1608 map. Within the interior of this landmass, two inset biblical scenes are presented. On the left, Adam and Eve are shown in the Garden of Eden, it is Adamnot Evewho reaches for the forbidden fruit. On the right, the Expulsion from Eden is illustrated, with the pair being driven out by the devil.nA large cartouche located in North America contains an extensive legend of discoveries, alongside nine portraits of prominent geographers and circumnavigators: Claudius Ptolemy, Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, Ferdinand Magellan, Sir Francis Drake, Thomas Cavendish, Olivier van Noort, Joris van Spilbergen, and Jacob le Maire.nThe map is framed by an elaborate border. The upper border features eight sovereigns on horseback, each set within arched openings supported by ornate columns. The lower border depicts ten pairs of male and female figures in traditional costumes from various European countries, while the side borders each display nine town views in oval frames. Some of these figures were inspired by Claes Janszoon Visschers 1614 world map nThe maps plates were sold after his wifes death and acquired by Dirck Evertsen Lons, who reprinted the map in the same year while working for Johannes Janssonius. Janssonius later issued editions in 1626 and 1632.
