Description: This rare set of engraved globe gorestwo sheets, each with six segmentswas designed to form a small terrestrial globe about 18.5 cm in diameter. Although dateed 1603 (Lugduni excudebat Gulielmus Nicolai Belga. Prope S. Antonium. 1603), the maps content was already outdated, reflecting cartographic ideas from around fifty years earlier.nThe East Indian islands are labelled as "recently discovered 1520," and the gores omit significant updates introduced by prominent late sixteenth-century mapmakers such as Abraham Ortelius, Gerard Mercator, and Giacomo Gastaldi. Instead, Nicolai based his gores on earlier globe models by Caspar Vopell (1536) and François Demongenet (1560), which include Central America but leave out many lands identified later in the century.nThis reliance on older sourcers suggests the globe was not intended for practical navigation, but rather for teaching, decoration, or appealing to an antiquarian audience. At a time when cartographers in the Netherlands and Italy were pushing for more accuracy and detail, Nicolais decision to stick with earlier models makes this globe an interesting outlier in the story of early modern mapmaking.
