Description: Pieter Goos was a Dutch map and chartmaker, whose father, Abraham Goos had already published numerous globes, land and sea maps together with Jodocus Hondius and Johannes Janssonius in Antwerp. Pieter gained recognition due to the publication of sea charts and sea atlases. His first pilot book, De lichtende columne ofte zeespiegel was released in 1650. Sixteen years later, he published the Zee-Atlas ofte Water-Wereld, which quickly gained acclaim as one of the finest sea atlases of its time. This sea atlas included this double-hemisphere world map with titles in both Latin and DutchThe map features insets of the North and South Poles, placed in the lower left and right corners, respectively. Australia is labelled as "Hollandia Nova," showing the southern tip of Tasmania as charted by Abel Tasman. Notably, the northwestern portion of North America remains uncharted, and California is depicted as an island.nAt the lower center of the map, allegorical figures representing the seasons are displayed, both male and female, each with their characteristic attributes. Spring, surrounded by flowers, sits next to Summer, who holds a Horn of Plenty. "Old Man" Winter kneels to the right, while Dionysus, the Greek god of fertility and wine, symbolizes an abundant harvest. Four wind heads blow across the map from different direction.nAlong the top edge, the sun and moon are shown among clouds, with various birds, large and small, flying through the sky. The cartouche in the upper left corner is decorated with two birds, while the cartouche in the upper right is embellished with four fish.
