Description: This is the first world map by the influential Dutch cartographer Petrus Plancius, published in Amsterdam in 1590. Titled Orbis terrarum typus de integro multis in locis emendatus (A New Map of the World, Corrected in Many Places), it reflects Planciuss ambition to present an updated and more accurate rendering of global geography, drawing on the latest reports from Portuguese and Spanish voyages.nPlancius adopted a double-hemisphere projection, a relatively novel format at the time, influenced by the cartographic work of Rumold Mercator. The map shows a large southern continent (Terra Australis Incognita) and includes speculative geography such as the Strait of Anian and the mythical kingdoms of Quivira and Anian in North America. The depiction of the Arctic includes early references to Nova Zembla and hypothetical passages through the North.nPlancius was a key figure in Dutch navigation and the development of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). His maps combined humanist scholarship with practical application, making them important tools for both exploration and commercial expansion. This map is notable not only for its geographic content but also for its decorative flourishes, including strapwork borders, classical figures, and celestial motifs.nLater issues of this map (#71 for 1594) were published by Cornelis Claesz and served as models for many Dutch world maps well into the early seventeenth century.
