Description: This richly detailed sea chart of the Pacific Ocean, engraved and published by Hendrick Doncker in 1666, spans the expanse between the western coast of California and the Ilhas de Ladrones (Mariana Islands). Oriented with east at the top, it presents a broad yet selective vision of the Pacific, combining firsthand discoveries with speculative geography characteristic of the mid-seventeenth century.nDoncker was a pioneering Amsterdam bookseller, publisher, and hydrographer who operated a successful business for nearly five decades. In a period when many publishers copied existing charts, Doncker distinguished himself by producing original works grounded in his own research. His maps were praised for their accuracy and regular revisionqualities that underpinned his influential De zee-atlas ofte water-waereld (1659), of which only one known copy survives today (National Library of Australia). In 1676, he published an expanded version, De nieuwe groote vermeerderde Zeeatlas, reissued into the early eighteenth century. After his death in 1699, the business was continued by his son Hendrick II before being absorbed into the stock of Johannes van Keulen.nThis chart features several key discoveries from Abel Tasmans first voyage (164243), including:n Van Diemens Land (Tasmania), identified with annotations and daten Nova Zeelandia (New Zealand), prominently noted along Tasman's documented routenA wide array of Pacific islands is shown, ranging from known archipelagos to conjectural forms based on earlier explorers reports and cartographic tradition. The combination of empiricism and imaginationtypical of the eras maritime mappingmakes this a vivid example of Dutch engagement with the Pacific prior to the voyages of Dampier and Cook.nThe Pascaart van Zuyd Zee is both a navigational instrument and a document of evolving European perspectives on the Pacific world. Its orientation, scale, and decorative flourishes reflect Donckers distinct contribution to Dutch hydrography during its golden age.
