Description: Anthonie Theunis Jacobsz established a printing and publishing business in Amsterdam, focusing on pilot books and sea atlases. Although he passed away relatively young in 1650, the majority of his works were published posthumously by his sons, Jacob and Caspar. To differentiate themselves from another printer named Jacobsz, the brothers adopted the name 'Lootsman' (meaning sea pilot).nBefore creating this map, the Lootsman brothers relied on the 1661 map or a copperplate by Johannes van Loon, which itself was based on Hendrik Doncker's 1659 map (see #234 for the 1667 edition). nAround 1669, they replaced the map with this similar one bearing their own address: t Amsterdam By Jacob en Casparus Lootsman Boeckverkoopers opt Water inde Lootsman.nThis map is oriented with east at the top, as indicated by two compass roses. It is adorned with an elaborate title cartouche decorated with a garland of kelp and sea shells. The map is particularly significant for illustrating Dutch discoveries in northern and western Australia, including:n Dirk Hartog (1616): The first European known to set foot on Australia's western coast, naming it 't Landt van Eendracht (Land of Eendracht).n Frederick de Houtman (1619): Conducted further explorations along the west coast.n The Leeuwin (1622): A Dutch ship after which Cape Leeuwin, Australia's southwestern cape, is named.n Jan Carstenszoon and Willem Joosten van Colster (1623): Explored northern Australia, including Cape York and Arnhem Land.n Pieter Nuyts (1627): Mapped parts of Australia's southern coast during his voyage on the 't Gulden Zeepaert (Golden Seahorse).n Gerrit Frederikszoon de Witt (1628): Contributed to mapping sections of the Australian coastline, leading to the designation G.F. de Wits Land.nAny references to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) and Staten Land (New Zealand)both discovered by Abel Tasman during his first voyage in 1642are obscured by the cartouche.
