Description: Johannes van Loon was an accomplished mathematician and astronomer. He began his cartographic career in the 1640s working with Theunis Jacobsz. By 1650 he was collaborating with Johannes Janssonius, engraving plates for significant works, including the final volume of Janssoniuss Atlas Novus and Andreas Cellariuss renowned celestial atlas, Harmonia Macrocosmica. nIn 1661, van Loon, together with his brother Gilles, published the Klaer-Lichtende Noort-Ster ofte Zee Atlas, a sea atlas containing thirty-five maps, including this map of the Western Pacific. The map is orientated with the east at the top, aligning with the perspective of navigators approaching the Mexican silver port of Acapulco from the Far East. It provides a detailed depiction of the western coastlines of the Americas, encompassing regions from present-day Mexico (Nova Hispania) through Peru (Perv) to Chile (Chili).nCartographically, the map draws heavily on Hendrik Donker's 1659 map of the Western Pacific but includes additional details, such as the east coast of Central America. The nomenclature remains largely consistent with Donkers work, and the inclusion of "P Sir Francisco Draco" off the coast of the island of California, referencing the English explorer Sir Francis Drake.nIn 1666, the plates for the sea atlas passed to Jan Jansson van Waesberge, who co-published another edition with van Loon. By 1676, the atlas had expanded to fifty maps reflecting ongoing updates in maritime cartography. Waesberge continued publishing the atlas until 1706.
