Description: Pieter Goos was a Dutch map and chartmaker, whose father, Abraham Goos had already published numerous globes, land and sea maps together with Jodocus Hondius and Johannes Janssonius in Antwerp. Pieter gained recognition due to the publication of sea charts and sea atlases. His first pilot book, De lichtende columne ofte zeespiegel was released in 1650. Sixteen years later, he published the Zee-Atlas ofte Water-Wereld…, which quickly gained acclaim as one of the finest sea atlases of its time. This sea atlas included this double-hemisphere world map with titles in both Latin and Dutch.nThis sea chart of Australia, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Korea, and India is oriented with east at the top. It is divided by three prominent vertical lines marking the Tropic of Cancer (23N), the equator (0), and the Tropic of Capricorn (23S). The chart reflects the advanced cartographic knowledge available to Dutch VOC vessels, three of which are depicted sailing across the waters of the Indian Ocean.nThe map highlights the discoveries made by Abel Tasman in northern Australia (labeled Nova Hollandia) during his second voyage in 1644. Goos also recorded early Dutch explorations along Australias western and southern coasts:nDirk Hartog (1616): n Aboard the Eendracht, accidentally discovered Dirk Hartog Island.n Charted the western coast of Australia up to about 22 S ('tLandt van dEendracht, 1616 and Dirck Hartogs ree[de]).nWillem de Houtman and Jacob dEdel (1619):n Sighted land near modern-day Perth, naming it dEdelsland.n Charted the Houtman Abrolhos islands and Turtle Dove Shoal (Tortelduyf).nCrew of the Leeuwin (1622):n Charted the southwestern coast of Australia (t Landt vande Leeuwin det 1622).nJan Carstenszoon (1623):n Aboard the Pera and Arnhem, explored New Guineas south coast.n Charted the western coast of Cape York Peninsula and named Staaten Rivier.nPieter Nuyts (1627):nExplored the southern coast from Cape Leeuwin to the Nuyts Archipelago (tLandt van P. Nuyts, 26 Jan 1627).nGerrit Frederikszoon de Witt (1628):n Grounded near Australias northwest coast (near Port Hedland) and continued mapping southward.nNotable non-Dutch contribution Captain John Brookes (1622):n Commander of the English ship Trial, which ran aground near the Montebello Islands (Trial Rocks).
