Description: According to Simon Dewez this map of Timor is in Freycinet's own hand (View Record (#264)). nThis manuscript chart of Port Praslin, located on the côte des Arsacidesan 18th-century name for part of the Solomon Islands near Timoris attributed by Simon Dewez to the hand of Louis de Freycinet. The title identifies the harbour as first charted by Jean-François-Marie de Surville during his 1769 Pacific voyage.nIn the lower left corner is a note indicating the source:nTiré du recueil des cartes des découvertes de la France au Sud-Est de la Nouvelle-Guinée. Par M. de Fleurieu publié en 1790. Bibliothèque Impériale 4 août 1808.n(Taken from the collection of maps of French discoveries in the South-East of New Guinea, by M. de Fleurieu, published in 1790. Imperial Library, 4 August 1808.)nThe map includes several named islands such as Île Marianne, Île de lAiguade, and a significant manuscript annotation:nIci les bateaux ont été attaqués par les gens du pays (Here the boats were attacked by the local people). This note, likely referencing an incident during Survilles landing in 1769, offers rare insight into early contact and conflict between European crews and Indigenous communities.nHydrographic detail includes coastal soundings and anchorage points, consistent with Freycinets training and with the scientific aims of late Enlightenment French cartography.nSee also View Record (#264)n(Taken from the collection of maps of French discoveries in the South-East of New Guinea, by M. de Fleurieu, published in 1790.
