Description: Thomas Livingstone Mitchell, a British surveyor, arrived in Sydney in 1827 with his family Appointed Surveyor-General of New South Wales in 1828, he held this position for nearly three decades. During his tenure, Mitchell led four significant expeditions (18311832, 18351836, 1836, and 18451846) into Australias interior. After his first three expeditions, Mitchell returned to England, where he published his exploration account, Three Expeditions into the Interior of Eastern Australia, in 1838, in which this map is featured.nThis map illustrates Mitchells early expeditions and the surveyed territory of southeastern Australia. It spans from Port Macquarie in the east to Kangaroo Island in the west, focusing on specific regions he explored. The map highlights geographic features such as rivers, mountain ranges, and creeks.nMitchells routes are marked along the map, and he documented significant observations along these paths. He also engaged with local Aboriginal communities. For instance, on his northern route, he recorded, Hereabouts according to the natives, the Nammoy spreads its[sic] waters, or dies on very extensive plains.nIn the bottom right corner, the map features cross-sections of various rivers surveyed by Mitchell, illustrating riverbanks and water depths. Along the maps edge, profile views of islands in Bass Strait are included. Additionally, an inset in the lower left corner depicts the mouth of the Glenelg River, explored as part of Mitchells third expedition. The map has been hand signednThere is a slight differece between this state and the first. In the first, the title reads "Map of the South Eastern ..". In this state, "Map of" is removed. The map's title, hand-signed title by Sir T. L. Mitchell, attests to his knighthood.
