Sydney in 1848: Illustrated by Copper Plate Engravings of the Principal Streets, Public Buildings, Churches, Chapels etc

Colouring: Uncoloured

Condition: Good

Description: Joseph Fowles is best known for his publication Sydney in 1848, which illustrated the city's streets and buildings as they appeared that year. His aim, as stated in the book, was to present Sydney as it truly was, rather than how it was perceived in England. The detailed drawings and descriptions have since become an important resource for studying nineteenth-century Sydney. Although this remains his most enduring contribution, during his lifetime, Fowles was more widely recognised as an artist, racing enthusiast, and drawing teacher.
