Description: Emanuel Bowen was a prominent British engraver and cartographer of the mid-eighteenth century, recognised for his detailed atlases, county maps, and geographic publications. Appointed mapmaker to both King George II of England and King Louis XV of France, Bowen enjoyed wide professional acclaim during his lifetime. Despite this, he died in povertya fate not uncommon among map engravers of the period. His cartographic legacy was continued by his son, Thomas Bowen, who inherited and carried forward the family business.nThis finely engraved map of Bermudareferred to here as Bermudas or Sommers Islandsis based on an actual survey and exemplifies Bowens precision and decorative style. Oriented with northeast at the top, the map details the island's internal divisions, roads, settlements, and tribal areas, including Sandys, Warwick, Pembroke, Devonshire, Smiths, and Hamilton. It also charts coastal features and navigational hazards in the surrounding Atlantic waters, reflecting the strategic maritime importance of the archipelago.nOriginally published in Volume I of A Complete System of Geography, the map was part of a broader effort to present comprehensive and systematically arranged geographic knowledge of the known world. Bowens attention to both aesthetic and informational detail makes this map an enduring example of mid-eighteenth-century British cartography.
