Description: Giovanni Antonio Magini, a distinguished Italian polymath, excelled in mapmaking, astronomy, astrology, and mathematics. After earning a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Bologna, he published his first work Ephemerides coelestium motuum, an astronomical treatise, in 1582. In 1588, Magini was appointed to the prestigious chair of mathematics at the University of Bologna, a position he held for the rest of his life.nIn 1589, Magini published Novae cœlestium orbium theoricae congruentes cum observationibus N. Copernici, in which he rejected Nicolas Copernicuss heliocentric model in favour of a geocentric worldview. During the 1590s, he expanded his academic contributions with works on surveying, surveying, trigonometry, and the invention of a mechanical calculator. nIn 1596, Magini edited a quarto edition of Ptolemys Geography, which was published in Latin by the Heirs of Simon Galignani (Giovanni and Giorgio Galignani) in Venice. This was followed by Italian translations by Leonardo Cernoti in 1597 and 1598, also issued by the same press. nIncluded in the 1598 Italian edition was this reduced-scale world map derived from Gerard Mercator's 1569 wall map. The map depicts a series of Arctic islands in the north and a vast, hypothetical southern landmass adorned with mythical mountain ranges and rivers. South of the Straits of Magellan, it shows Tierra del Fuego, while beneath southern Africa lies Terra Australis and Psitacorum regio (Land of Parrots). South of the island of Java, the provinces of Lucach and Maletur, noted by Marco Polo, are marked.nThe text below the map references the navigational works of Pietro Medina, Giovani Aurigario and Pietro Nonio, providing instructions for navigating between various locations.
