Description: The Australian Agricultural Company (AACo.) was formally established by an Act of the British Parliament, enacted on 21 June 1824 under the citation 5 Geo. IV c. 86. This foundational legislation granted the newly incorporated company broad powers and authorities for the cultivation and improvement of waste lands in the Colony of New South Wales, reflecting the British government's interest in using private enterprise to develop colonial resources.nAn official Prospectus (View Record (#246)) was issued in the same year to outline the companys objectives, attract subscribers, and provide details on land entitlement, governance, and expected operations. This document was printed in London is a vital companion to the parliamentary legislation, offering insight into the AACo.s ambitions and public positioning in 1824.nFollowing the grant of a Royal Charter, the company was allocated one million acres of land at Port Stephens on the north coast of New South Wales. A local advisory committeeincluding Phillip Parker King, James Macarthur, Hannibal Macarthur, and James Bowmanwas appointed to assess and supervise the enterprise on the ground. The AACo. also became a significant employer of convict labour, at no cost to the government, thus embedding itself within the colonial labour system.nA further Act of Parliamentpassed on 29 May 1830 and cited as 11 Geo. IV c. 24amended and extended the companys powers, particularly regarding land tenure and management responsibilities in New South Wales. Titled An Act to amend an Act for granting certain Powers and Authorities to a Company to be incorporated by Charter…, this legislation reflects the continuing evolution of the AACo.s legal and operational framework during the early decades of British settlement.nTogether, the 1824 and 1830 Acts, along with the printed Prospectus, form a foundational body of legal and promotional material relating to one of Australias earliest and most significant colonial enterprises.
