Description: Johann Matthias Reinecke was a German polymath and scientist renowned for his contributions to cartography and paleontology. A man of diverse talents, he spoke eight languages and also wrote poems and songs. Among his cartographic achievements is a series of maps produced for the Geographical Institute in Weimar, which published this map. nThe map depicts Australia and the South Pacific. R.V Tooley describes it as the first German map to separate the Island of Tasmania from the continent of Australia. In all editions Australia is labelled Neu Holland vormals Ulimaroa (New Holland, formerly Ulimaroa), while the eastern part of the continent is marked Neu Süd Wallis oder Sydney-Cove ("New South Wales or Sydney Cove").nThe map was republished five times between 1801 and 1820 (although Tooley notes only four editions). With each new edition updates reflected the latest geographical discoveries, including the addition of new place names and the completion of previously unknown sections of the coastline.
