Description: his double-hemisphere world map was first published c.1650 in Amsterdam by Paulus Aertsz van Ravesteyn for inclusion in editions of the Dutch Statenbijbel. It is regarded by Simon Dewez as a reworking of an earlier 1614 world map (see Shirley, map 288) by Nicolaes Visscher's father, Claes Janszoon Visscher (see View Record (#10), View Record (#11), View Record (#12), View Record (#292), View Record (#293), View Record (#458)). A surviving copy of the 1614 map is preserved at the Badische Landesbibliothek in Karlsruhe. Faint traces of the earlier plate remain visible, including lettering for Terra del Fuego and the coastline of Magallanica beneath the south east coast of New Guinea.nThe map reflects the expansion of Dutch maritime knowledge in the first half of the seventeenth century, including the early discoveries in Australia. It incorporates the results of Abel Tasman's first voyage (1642-1643), identifying Tasmania as A. Van Diemen's Landt, but predates his 1644 voyage and therefore omits the northern coast of Australia. nSeveral earlier Dutch encounters with Australia are shown, including Dirk Hartogs 1616 landfall, the 1619 voyage of Willem de Houtman and Jacob dEdel near present-day Perth, the charting of the southwestern coast by the Leeuwin in 1622, Jan Carstenszoons exploration of Cape York in 1623, Pieter Nuytss survey of the southern coast in 1627, and Gerrit Frederik. de Witts grounding in 1628. Willem Janszs 1606 landfall on Cape York Peninsula is not shown.nPersonifications of the four continents appear in the corners, while two small central diagrams contrast the Copernican (heliocentric) and Ptolemaic (geocentric) models of the universe. Celestial hemispheres are shown to the southeast, and an inscription in the southwest recounts the voyages of Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, and the seven circumnavigators of the globe.
