Description: Henri Abraham Chatelain was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origin. He lived in several cities throughout his life, including Paris, St. Martins, London (around 1710), The Hague (around 1721), and Amsterdam (around 1728). Between 1705 and 1720, in collaboration with his father Zacharie, his brother Zacharie Jr., and his brother-in-law François l'Honoré, he published the Atlas historique in seven volumes. This comprehensive work was later reissued by Zacharie Jr. between 1732 and 1739.nWhile the primary focus of the Atlas historique was geography, it also included substantial historical, political, and genealogical information, as reflected in the six title pages (View Record (#301), View Record (#355), View Record (#361)). The work was rich in details concerning civil, military, and ecclesiastical governance, including this one and the Gouvernement de la Compagnie des Indes orientales (Government of the East India Company) (View Record (#250)).nThis page is the forty-fourth engraving in volume one, describes the infrastructure of the Dutch government. It outlines the governance of the separate provinces and the overall state government. Accompanied by thirteen vignettes, the engravings depict various aspects of the Dutch political system: seven on the left, showing the Seven United Provinces (Geldria, Holland, Zelande, Utrecht, Over Issel, and Groninga); four in the centre, representing key bodies such as the Southern Holland committee of councillors, the Accounts chambre, the Admiraltys room, and the Union of Utrecht (23 January 1579) ; and two on the right, depicting the State Council and the assembly of the State General. A note beneath the vignettes reads: "par la concorde les petites choses croissent et par la discorde elles se detruisent" ("through harmony small things grow, and through discord, they are destroyed"). Details such as coats of arms are included in each vignette.nThe Atlas historique includes numerous maps, many of which were engraved by Henri Chatelain, often based on the works of French cartographer Guillaume Delisle. Two world maps were included in volume one (#247 and View Record (#248)), both from the 1719 edition
