Description: This dramatic engraving depicts the decisive Christian victory over the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Lepanto, fought on 7 October 1571 near the port of Lepanto (modern-day Naupaktos, Greece). The battle, provoked by the Ottoman seizure of Cyprus and mounting attacks against Christian territories, united the forces of Spain (including Naples and Sicily), Venice, and the Papal States in the Holy League against the Ottoman Empire. The engagement ended with the near-total destruction of the Ottoman fleet, a pivotal moment in halting Ottoman expansion in the Mediterranean.nIn the foreground, a Christian galley strikes an Ottoman ship, with drowning Ottoman sailors seen in the water. A fierce engagement between two admiral galleysmarked by the three lanterns at their sternsis shown nearby. Ottoman forces are distinguished by their turbans and crescent flags. The original design was created by Flemish artist Johannes Stradanus (Jan van der Straet) for the 1589 ceremonial entry of Duchess Christina of Lorraine into Florence. Although ultimately rejected in favour of a less dramatic version by Bernardino Monaldi, Stradanuss vivid design was first engraved by Jan Collaert and published by Philip Galle. This later Amsterdam edition, engraved in mirror image by Cornelisz. Lambertus and published by Claes Jansz Visscher, slightly enlarges the composition while retaining Stradanuss dynamic vision of the battle.
