Description: This set of eight engraved globe gores was produced by Vincenzo Coronelli in Venice in 1688, forming part of the printed edition of his monumental terrestrial globes originally created for King Louis XIV of France. Designed for a globe measuring 110 cm (42 inches) in diameter, these gores form the southern hemisphere of the terrestrial globe, covering regions south of the equator, including parts of South America, Africa, the Indian Ocean, and Antarctica as then imagined.nVincenzo Coronelli, a Franciscan friar, mathematician, and cartographer, was one of the most celebrated figures in seventeenth-century cartography. Entering the Franciscan Order at fifteen and later ordained as a priest, Coronellis interests expanded from theology to mathematics, astronomy, and geography. He studied in Venice, Ravenna, and Paris, refining his skills in geography and engraving. In 1680, he founded the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti ("Cosmographic Academy of the Argonauts"), the worlds first geographical society.nIn 1681, Coronelli was invited to Paris by Louis XIV to create two monumental manuscript globesone terrestrial and one celestialeach over four metres in diameter. Completed in 1683, these globes embodied the most current geographical knowledge and symbolised the French kings global ambitions. After returning to Venice in 1684, Coronelli established a cartographic workshop at the Convent of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, where he produced numerous maps and atlases, including the Atlante Veneto ("Venetian Atlas," 169196) and the Corso Geografico Universale ("Universal Geographical Course," 169297). His 1688 printed globes, scaled to 110 cm in diameter, offered a more accessible yet equally detailed version of the Parisian manuscript globes.nThe eight gores from this set display Coronellis characteristic blend of scientific precision and artistic elaboration. The southern hemisphere is depicted with detailed coastlines, conjectural outlines of southern lands, and richly ornamented cartouches and allegorical elements. Emphasis is placed on major exploratory routes, maritime observations, and the symbolic representation of global trade and discovery.nPrinted globe gores of this calibre represent a major achievement in late seventeenth-century cartography, illustrating Coronellis ability to unite scientific inquiry, exploration, and artistic vision into a coherent and monumental cartographic project.
