Description: In 1584-85, Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer published Spieghel der zeevaerdt (Mariner's Mirror), a groundbreaking pilot guide designed specifically to address the complexities of coastal sailing. This work provided seamen with detailed charts, sailing directions, and advice on how to navigate the coasts of Western Europe. The charts depicted key landmarks, harbours, and potential navigational hazards, such as shoals, rocks, and sandbankscritical elements for ensuring safe navigation along coastal waters. Spieghel der zeevaerdt was first translated from Dutch to English in 1588, German in 1589, French in 1590, and Latin in 1591 (for title page of this edition see entry #260).nIn 1596, Amsterdam publisher Cornelis Claeszoon issued an expanded second edition titled Den Nieuwen Spiegel der zeevaert (The New Mirror of Navigation), with a version also published in Antwerp by Jean Bellère. A French edition followed in 1600 and was reprinted in 1605, as illustrated on this title page. In this edition, the title page pays tribute to the Dutch pilot Willem Barentsz., acknowledging his contributions to navigation with the inscription: Avec certaines notales de Cartes, apparitions, et descriptions adioustées chascune en son lieu convenable par Guillaume Bernard [=Willem Barentsz] tres renommé Pilote (With certain notes of maps, sightings, and descriptions added, each in its appropriate place, by Guillaume Bernard [=Willem Barentsz], the very renowned pilot.). Barentsz, a skilled Dutch navigator, embarked on three expeditions to the far north in search of the Northeast Passage. On his third voyage in 1596, his crew became stranded at Novaya Zemlya, and he died on the return journey.nAs in Waghenaer's original 1584 title page, this 1605 edition illustrates a group of figures gathered around a circular mirror, though their positions have changed. One figure holds a pair of dividers and a cross-staff, another a chart, and a third, a book, all seemingly engaged in discussion. Flanking the group are celestial globes. Below them are two oval, birds-eye views of the ports of Zuiderzee and Lisbon, followed by two terrestrial globes, and then views of the ports of Heisinger and Venice. The upper corners feature illustrations navigational instruments such as a quadrant, cross-staff, astrolabe, and lead weight, while at the bottom, a dramatic scene depicts a sea battle between two Dutch ships and an English man-of-war.
