Description: This world map was first published c.1652 in Amsterdam, shortly after Nicolaes Visscher I succeeded his father Claes Janszoon Visscher (View Record (#10), View Record (#11), View Record (#12), View Record (#292), View Record (#293)). It was issued separately and also incorporated into composite atlases assembled during the mid-seventeenth century.nThis map is framed by an elaborate decorative border combining astronomical, ethnographic, and allegorical imagery. Above and below the main projection are celestial charts depicting the constellations of the northern and southern skies, reflecting contemporary interest in astronomy and its importance for navigation and cartography.nSurrounding the map are twelve vignettes of costumed figures representing a European conception of the worlds peoples, including Hispani, Galli, Itali, Germani, Angli, Belgae, Groenlandi, Chinenses, Javani, Guineenses, Peruuiani, and Magellanici. Four additional panels depict the classical elementsEarth, Air, Fire, and Waterdrawn from established iconographic traditions. Together, these ethnographic and allegorical scenes reflect both didactic intentions and prevailing European notions of global diversity.nThe engraving of the decorative border is attributed to Pieter Goos, who collaborated with the Visscher family on several projects. His skill in rendering fine costume detail and complex allegorical scenes enhances the visual richness of the map.
