Description: Issued around 1664, this double-hemisphere world map is a re-working of an earlier map published around 1650 by Jacob Colom. Hendrick Doncker replaced Coloms name with his own in the title cartouche, but left the geography largely unchanged from the mid-century original, suggesting a commercial reissue of a map.nThe map presents a geographically transitional vision. A faint outline of Terra Australis Incognita appears, while the Australia is partially delineated yet unnamed. Tasmania and New Zealand are absent, reflecting knowledge prior to the voyages of Abel Tasman. In the north, Japan is shown without a northern coastline, suggesting it might connect to a larger landmass.nThe spandrels juxtapose ancient authority and early modern science. The top corners feature Julius Caesar and Claudius Ptolemy are paired with the elements Fire and Water, while the bottom corners depict Tycho Brahe and Nicolaus Copernicus with Earth and Air.nWithin ''Updating the Classical World'', this map illustrates how classical geographic ideas and visual traditions continued to shape global representation even as knowledge expanded unevenly.
