Description: Franz Swoboda, an Austrian cartographer active in the early nineteenth century, particularly between 1808 and 1815, focused much of his work on mapping Pacific regions, including Polynesia and Australia. Among his significant contributions is this 1805 map, titled Polynesia Newly Drawn in English. It depicts Oceania and Hawaii, featuring an incomplete depiction of Australias coastline, referred to as Neu Holland (New Holland). The map also includes New Zealand, Borneo, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, and various other islands in the regionnOn the map, Neu Holland is also labelled Ulimaroa, a term first introduced by the Swedish geographer Daniel Djurberg in in his 1776 work Geografie, sammandragen utur de nyaste och tilförliteligaste (Geography, Summaries of the Newest and Most Comprehensive Authors). Djurberg later elaborated on the term in his 1785 work Utförlig geografie (Detailed Geography) and his expanded 1801 Cosmografie samt beskrifning om Jorden i Allmänhet (Cosmography and Description of the Earth in General).nDjurberg explains that, according to a passage on page 436 of John Hawkesworths An Account of the Voyages Undertaken by the Order of His Present Majesty for Making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere (based on Cooks first voyage, 17681771), Cook, while on the northern coast of New Zealand, inquired of the indigenous inhabitants whether they knew of any other lands. They responded by describing a large land to the northwest, which they called Ulimaroa. Djurberg advocated for this name over New Holland, arguing that it was more authentic and better reflected the lands connection to its Pacific neighbours.
