Description: This influential double-hemisphere world map by Petrus Planciusengraved by Jan van Doetecum (whose signature appears in the lower left corner), and first published in 1594marked a significant advancement in late sixteenth-century Dutch cartography. Plancius, born Pieter Platevoet, was a Flemish theologian who fled religious persecution in Brussels and settled in Amsterdam. There, he became a central figure in Dutch navigation, cartography, and cosmography, drawing on privileged access to Portuguese charts and navigational data. As geographer to the Dutch East India Company (VOC), Plancius played a vital role in shaping early Dutch voyages to Asia.nThis 1594 map builds upon Planciuss earlier 1590 world map (View Record (#340)) incorporating geographical updates and celestial features derived from his 1592 wall map. A dominant feature is the speculative southern continent Magellanica, which includes Tierra del Fuegonot yet known to be an islandand extends northward to encompass New Guinea. In accordance with the conventions of the time, the continent is labelled with names such as Beach, Lucach, and Maletur, derived from Marco Polos Travels but mislocated due to a textual error in Johann Huttichs Novus Orbis (1532) (View Record (#119)) led to their misattribution to the southern continent. This error influenced mapmakers like Plancius to incorporate these names into their depictions of the southern landmass.nDecorative elements include constellations depicted in roundels between the hemispheres, based on a celestial globe Plancius designed with Jacob van Langren. The map is further embellished with ships and sea monsters, reinforcing its maritime context.nSurrounding the map are richly allegorical figures representing six world regionsEuropa, Asia, Africa, Mexicana, Peruana, and Magellanica. These figures reflect late Renaissance European perceptions of cultural hierarchy, empire, and the exotic:n Europa appears enthroned with symbols of power and learning;n Asia is richly dressed, riding a rhinoceros;n Africa is depicted with minimal clothing, seated on a crocodile;n Mexicana and Peruana are shown in indigenous dress, amid scenes of native life and European incursion;n Magellanica, the most speculative, is portrayed in European garb, mounted on an elephant, and surrounded by imagined beasts.nOriginally issued as a separate map, this plate was later incorporated into Jan Huyghen van Linschotens Itinerario, Voyage ofte Schipvaert naer Oost ofte Portugaels Indien (from 1599 onward), (English edition: 1598, View Record (#356)), extending its influence across European navigational and geographical literature.
