Description: ''Volume 2: ''Marketed as a sequel to George Barringtons voyage narrative (#416), this volume broadens its scope to present a general history of the colony of New South Wales. It includes descriptive accounts of the geography, Indigenous inhabitants, flora and fauna, and the development of early settlements such as Sydney, Parramatta, and Botany Bay. Like its predecessor, the work draws heavilyoften without attributionfrom official sources, particularly David Collinss An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales. Although published under Barringtons name, its authorship is considered spurious and largely the product of commercial publishers seeking to capitalise on his notoriety.nThe engraved title page features a vignette of a black swan, symbolising the exotic and unfamiliar nature of the southern continent. The volume includes a hand-coloured frontispiece of Sydney and thirteen additional hand-coloured plates engraved by V. Woodthorpe. These striking illustrations depict Aboriginal Australians, native plants, and a variety of animalsincluding a kangaroo, emu, and several birds such as the black cockatoo, bird of paradise, and mountain eagle. The visual program complements the texts romanticised depictions of the Australian environment, intended to captivate a British readership with scenes of colonial novelty and natural wonder.
