Description: This important chart depicts the western and northwestern coasts of Australia, based on discoveries made during early Dutch voyages in the first half of the seventeenth century. It forms part of Robert Dudleys DellArcano del Mare (Secrets of the Sea), first published in Florence between 1646 and 1647, and reissued in a revised, two-volume edition in 1661 under the title Arcano del Mare. The chart is engraved by Antonio Francesco Lucini and includes the notation L.o6.o in the title cartouche, placing it in Book VI, page 60 of the 1661 edition. nThis chart records the principal Dutch discoveries along Australias western and northern coastlines, including:n- Dirk Hartog (1616) Landt van Eendrachtn- Jan Carstenszoon and Willem van Colster (1623) Cape York and the Gulf of Carpentarian- Gerrit Frederikszoon de Witt (1628) G.F. de Wits Landtn- Abel Tasman (1644) Confirmed in the inscription Hollandia Nova: detecta A 1644nIt also includes the west coast of Cape York Peninsula and part of New Guinea, likely based on a manuscript chart by Arent Martensz de Leeuw, chief pilot on Carstenszoons 1623 expedition. That chart, now held by the National Library of Australia, formed one of the earliest cartographic records of the region.nDellArcano del Mare was the first sea atlas produced by an Englishman, and the first to use Mercators projection throughout.Compiled while Dudley was in exile in Florence under Medici patronage, the atlas is noted for its scientific rigour, elegant design, and integration of Dutch, Iberian, and classical sources.nBook VI, in which this chart appears, also includes a range of detailed sea charts covering the East Indies and the Pacific. These include View Record (#222), a general chart of Asia; View Record (#223), a detailed depiction of the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java; View Record (#224), which maps the islands of Celebes, Timor, Banda, and surrounding regions; View Record (#274), showing islands in the South Sea discovered in 1617; View Record (#275), a speculative chart of eastern Hokkaido and the adjacent strait with America; and View Record (#276), tracing the Pacific from the Solomon Islands to the coast of Lima in Peru.nTogether, these maps reflect Dudleys broad maritime vision and his ambition to synthesise the most advanced navigational knowledge of the seventeenth century into a coherent and elegantly presented atlas.
