Description: This detailed chart depicts the Sunda Strait, the narrow but strategically vital maritime passage between the islands of Sumatra and Java. It forms part of Robert Dudleys DellArcano del Mare (Secrets of the Sea), first published in Florence between 1646 and 1647 and reissued in a revised, two-volume edition in 1661 under the shortened title Arcano del Mare. The chart is engraved by Antonio Francesco Lucini and includes the notation L.o6.o in the title cartouche, placing it in Book VI, page 60 of the second edition.nThe Sunda Strait was one of the most heavily trafficked passages in the East Indies during the seventeenth century, serving as a critical route for Dutch East India Company (VOC) ships moving between the Indian Ocean and the Java Sea. Dudley labels Java as Iavamaggre, a name reflecting the Italianised form of Java Major, rooted in Marco Polos terminology. The chart includes coastal outlines, anchorages, and navigational hazards, reflecting Dudleys integration of Dutch hydrographic sources and his practical knowledge of oceanic navigation.nBook VI, in which this chart appears, also includes a range of detailed sea charts covering the East Indies and the Pacific.
