Description: This chart shows the eastern coast of Isola di Iezoa landmass representing early European conceptions of Hokkaidoalongside a supposed strait between Asia and America. It forms part of Robert Dudleys DellArcano del Mare (Secrets of the Sea), first published in Florence between 1646 and 1647, and reissued in a revised, two-volume edition in 1661 under the title Arcano del Mare. The chart was engraved by Antonio Francesco Lucini, though it does not include the L. reference typically found in the 1661 edition.nThe map reflects seventeenth-century European curiosity and confusion surrounding the North Pacific. The depiction of a narrow passage between Iezo and the American continent suggests belief in a northeastern passage and may have been influenced by contemporary Jesuit reports, Dutch trading routes, and earlier cartographic traditions. The vague shape and placement of the coastlines emphasise the speculative nature of Dudleys sources in this region, contrasting with the empirical precision of his charts based on VOC data.nThe chart is grouped with other Pacific and East Indies maps that appear in Book VI of the atlas.
