Description: This maritime chart of the Indian OceanCarte réduite de lOcéan Oriental ou Mer des Indeswas produced under the direction of Jacques-Nicolas Bellin, Chief Cartographer and Hydrographer to the French Navy. First published in 1740 by the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine, this is the second edition, revised in 1767, as noted in the cartouche engraved over North Africa.nThe chart exemplifies the rising prominence of French hydrography in the eighteenth century. Appointed in 1721, Bellin became the first Ingénieur de la Marine at the newly centralised Dépôt, and later served as Official Hydrographer to Louis XV. Under his leadership, the Dépôt became one of Europes most prolific centres for maritime cartography, producing both official charts for naval use and commercially distributed editions.nThis 1767 edition was also sold independently through outlets such as Mr. Danville and Mr. DApres, indicating the dual naval and civilian market for hydrographic materials in Enlightenment France. The map appears in volume two of LHydrographie françoise, a multi-volume atlas compiled by the Dépôt for the service of the French Navy.nGeographically, the second edition represents a significant cartographic update, particularly along the western coast of Terre Australes et Nouvelle Hollande (Australia). The revised coastline integrates data from earlier Dutch, English, and French voyages, highlighting Frances growing role in synthesising foreign discoveries into a national cartographic framework. Key sources include:n''Frederick de Houtman (1619)'' charted the western coast of Australia during his second East Indies voyage.n''Gerrit Frederikszoon de Witt (1628)'' contributed to mapping the northern and northwestern coasts.n''William Dampier (1699)'' English navigator who explored the west coast and named Baye des Chiens Marins (Shark Bay).n''Abraham Duquesne-Guitton (1687)'' French navigator whose sighting of Eendrachtsland (after Dirk Hartogs 1616 voyage) marked the first recorded French contact with Australia.nBellins chart reflects both the scientific ambitions of Enlightenment France and the geopolitical stakes of colonial expansion. The integration of Dutch and English place names, rendered in French, underscores a common eighteenth-century strategy: the appropriation and re-inscription of foreign geographic knowledge within an imperial framework.
