Description: This detailed sea chart by Hendrick Doncker depicts the eastern section of the East Indies and surrounding regions, extending from the southern tip of India (Cabo Comorin) to Japan including maritime Southeast Asia and parts of northern Australia (Nova Hollandia). Published in 1667, it forms part of Donckers pioneering De zee-atlas ofte water-waereld, first issued in 1659, and notable for its originality, precision, and empirical basisat a time when many contemporaries reproduced maps from rival publishers.nDonckers Zee-Atlas initially contained nineteen charts, but by the 1669 edition it had expanded to approximately fifty. This chart continued to appear in the enlarged De nieuwe groote vermeerderde Zeeatlas, published from 1676 and reissued through to 1712. The National Library of Australia holds the only known copy of the original 1659 edition (link) making it an important source for the study of early Dutch sea atlases. The chart encompasses:n Southern India and Ceylon (Sri Lanka)n The East Indies: Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Celebes, and the Moluccasn The Philippines and coastal Chinan Formosa and Japann The northern coast of Australia, reflecting early Dutch exploration (see #280 for the Lootsman version)nDesigned to be joined with its companion map, Pas-Caert van 't Westelyckste Deel van Oost-Indien, En de Eylanden daar onder begrepen, van C. de Bona Esperanca tot C. ComorinI (#347), this chart offered a comprehensive view of the Indian Ocean world and its trade routesfrom the Cape of Good Hope to East Asia.nFollowing Donckers death in 1699, his son continued the business until the familys stock was eventually acquired by Johannes van Keulen, consolidating Amsterdams hydrographic publishing under a single dominant firm.nThis map reflects the height of Dutch maritime cartography, combining practical navigational utility with a wide geographic vision of the East Indies and surrounding seas.
